Job DescriptionThis position directs and manages all aspects of United Way’s health and nutrition activities associated with the Centers for Disease Control’s Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CDC-CPPW) federal grant. Reporting to the Director of Youth Development, this director oversees and directs all of the school-age strategies and tasks associated with the schools and neighborhoods subcommittee of Activate Tucson, and the Youth Development Coalition’s Health Subcommittee. Strategies include building and enhancing school wellness councils to support Coordinated School Health Programs, afterschool health and wellness programs and professional development in the area of health and wellness for afterschool professionals. In addition, this director will be responsible for searching and applying for federal and local grants to sustain and enhance the school and community health initiative.

This is a full time position for a motivated individual with a high level of initiative, excellent management, communication, organizational and facilitation skills. Working with closely other United Way and Activate Tucson staff as well as community volunteers from government, social service agencies, foundations, and businesses, the individual coordinates activities in collaboration with local agencies that deliver health and wellness services to children and youth in child care centers, schools, afterschool programs, neighborhoods and other faith and community-based organizations.
Responsibilities:
Management and Administration
  • Leads and directs policy and project management of school-age health, community engagement and youth engagement in health initiatives.
  • Directs all funded activities, prioritizes responsibilities and assignments, and ensures completion of timely reports and work products.
  • Develops, directs, and monitors the overall budget in areas of responsibility.
  • Plans, designs and negotiates the scope of work with community partners and oversees contract and project monitoring for activities associated with the Health Sub-committee of the Youth Development Coalition.
  • Hires, directs and supervises the work of staff responsible for school community health partnership outcomes.
  • Creates and edits a variety of written documents, correspondence, speeches, and reports.
  • Ensures that all staff and consultants perform duties in accordance with United Way policies and procedures.
Planning and Community Development
  • Oversees the development of the strategic plan, objectives and outcomes for the Youth Development Coalition Health Subcommittee.
  • Oversees and facilitates the work program of the Youth Development Coalition Health Subcommittee.
  • Oversees the development of research and analysis of best practice, evaluation, and statistical information.
Resource Development
  • Collaborates with the Resource Development Division and other Community Development directors to secure business and foundation resources.
  • Secures additional resources by researching grant and other funding opportunities and writing and directing the development of collaborative grant proposals.
  • Develops positive working relationships with government and philanthropic organizations.
Performance Evaluation
  • Establishes requirements for contracted services and oversees reporting on overall performance objectives and outcomes as they relate to school community health partnerships.
  • Establishes evaluation and accountability mechanisms for United Way contracted services related to school community health partnerships.
  • Directs and manages the work of project managers and independent contractors to ensure consistency with objectives and outcomes.
  • Collaborates with United Way finance staff to assure that all program and financial procedures and payments are accountable to financial requirements and regulations.
Public Education/Social Marketing
  • Oversees public education and marketing activities for School Community Health Partnerships.
  • Promotes United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona to throughout the Pima County area through the media, local government, and local foundations.
  • Oversees the development and dissemination of informational and promotional materials.
Facilitation/Coordination
  • Provide excellent customer service as a component of all job duties.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with government and private philanthropic organizations and serves on the Activate Tucson Leadership Committee.
  • Coordinates activities with the State’s CDC CPPW grant and related health initiatives to avoid duplication and fragmentation.
  • Plans and coordinates regular meetings with program partners and key leaders of other Activate Tucson subcommittees to enhance the work for greatest community impact.
  • Plans and coordinates regular meetings with school wellness councils and student leadership teams to integrate all health activities occurring in schools, neighborhoods, faith/community-based organizations for greatest impact.
  • Creates data base and tracks progress of all Activate Tucson Schools and Neighborhood Committee partners in deliverables outlined in scope of work with the Pima County Health Department.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with a wide range of individuals in business, non-profit, private, and governmental organizations.
  • Directs and facilitates the work of independent contractors and other project participants to develop plans and projects.
  • Collaborates with other directors and managers at United Way to develop strategies and partnerships that results in having a major impact on the community.
Job Requirements
  • At least a bachelor’s degree in public health, public administration, or a related field; Masters degree preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of work experience and/or education may substitute for advanced degree.
  • Five years experience in youth development, k-12 education, health services or other related field (supervisory experience preferred).
  • Prior experience working with faith-based and/or community organizations
  • Bilingual Preferred.

  • Demonstrated understanding of evidence based nutrition and physical activity programs to decrease obesity
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including clear, concise and accurate written documents and well-developed computer skills.
  • Demonstrated success directing and managing multiple projects and budgets.
  • Demonstrated customer service, problem solving, time management, research, information management and higher level organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to tactfully handle stressful situations, negotiate and resolve conflicts, maintain confidentiality and to respect and observe organizational protocol.
  • Ability to travel to work in a variety of locations throughout the Pima County area and other parts of the State when required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with United Way staff at all levels, volunteers from diverse backgrounds, state and local government and philanthropic organizations, donors, community partners, and independent contractors.
  • Bilingual Preferred.
